Smashing Magazine came out with an article entitled "10 Steps to Make the Perfect Portfolio Website". This article has some useful tips on making your portfolio website. I have read it and have used some of the suggestions they have made. For instance, I used the suggestion of typing up the way to how pronounce my name under my profile picture on my website. I just figured that since the majority of the class is making portfolio websites, that this article could be very useful.

If you go to google.com/addurl/, you can let Google know of your site so it will pop-up in a web search. To improve your chances of being found, go to google.com/, to find Google's Webmaster Guidelines. I found all of this using Lynda.com, which I'll again suggest you should use.

Zack Silver: favorite web site

Since this is a webart class, I felt I should not focus all of my blog entries on movies, but maybe talk a little about my favorite website- it just happens to be a movie blog site. Joblo.com is where I go to get all my up to date movie info, with the latest news, trailers, and pictures being updated daily. I check this site at least 3 times a day. I love hearing the latest news in some of my most anticipated films, even ones that don’t come out for a few years. They almost always have accurate information, as they get them from real sources in the industry.

I also love the layout of this site. On the left are all the headlines for movie news, with each story on it’s own page in a very similar layout. There are tabs up top for the different categories on the site, including news, trailers, reviews etc. In my opinion this is a very top notch blog. Very easy to navigate and use, and has great information. I definitely recommend it to all hardcore movie fans.

Zack Silver: Trekkies research assignment

This semester I am taking a Youth Cultures class, where our final “research project” requires us to research a certain subculture and do a presentation on it. After having a list of around 30 subcultures, I choose Trekkies, the hardcore fans of the Star Trek series. One of the reasons being I was a HUGE fan of the last film that came out last year, as it instantly became one of my favorite films. I also have seen numerous of the older movies and TV shows, as I used to watch them with my dad. I was a moderate fan of this series, but wanted to dive deeper into how other people feel about it.

I choose to composite a video documentary of my findings. I composited multiple clips from the various shows, movies, and spoofs, as well as some from local Star Trek conventions. Then I interviewed multiple subjects. My grandparents were huge fans of the series from the start, and loved the new film. At my movie theater at home in Baltimore, one of my managers named John was a huge fan of the new movie, as he is a die-hard fan of the director J. J. Abrams and his previous work. I also interviewed and recorded one of my good friends, who never liked the series and didn’t bother to see the new movie. We sat down and watched the new film, and I got his reactions before and after: he liked it.

I am in the process now of editing all of this together. So far it has been going pretty well, but I am having some trouble trying to give it focus. I choose to use a narration to give the film a voice, as it was hard to tie some of the segments together. Overall I feel by putting the clips of the shows and movies, and the reactions I received in the interviews, I am able to capture the essence of this series, and what drove the fans to call themselves Trekkies. I hope to have this done and up on the web soon, and will put the link to it here.

Zack Silver: Remix assignment

For my remix assignment, I choose to focus on one of my hobbies: collecting movie posters. I love movie posters mainly with the idea that they are an image, either simple or very detailed, that can sum up a 90-minute movie. Some can be the simplest still from the film, or others can be an extensive 27 by 40 inch picture of all the characters, action scenes and special effects in a film. Ever since I started working at a movie theater over 2 years ago, I have collected real size movie posters for films that have recently come up. Most of the blockbusters, Oscar contenders and more I have in a big box in my basement at home. Not sure what I will do with all them one day, but I right now love the idea of having over 200 posters in my possession.

For my assignment, I choose to “remix” the movie poster for the film Up. The original poster is a simple image of a balloon floating in the sky, but symbolizes many themes in the film. I composited 2 remixes of this poster. One turns the balloons upside down, going against the film title Up. When initially looking at this image, you get a negative feeling, thinking the balloon is going to crash. You might think this was a negative film, while in fact it is a very positive one. For the second remix poster I copied the balloon image, and pasted it on a completely different picture of a volcano with lava I got from creative commons. This also is a very negative image, not the happy Disney film one things they are seeing. It also lies as that scenery is never actually in the film. Both of these posters create a sense of “false advertising”, if Disney were to publish them and put them in the movie theaters. I wanted to express in this project how changing a few little things on a poster, can in turn completely change the meaning of the film and what you want the viewer to think before they see it.

Zack Silver: Toy Story 3 promotion

This spring my internship did a big promotion with the upcoming Toy Story 3 at major colleges throughout the country. The idea behind it was that students in college now were big fans of the Toy Story films when they were younger, and have strong interest in seeing the new film. Last year’s Up was a big hit in general, but also with the college audience. Disney wanted to do a screening of Toy Story 3 with college students across the country, with the hopes that they would spring the word to those who haven’t seen it on how great it was.

We had to hang flyers across the campus advertising “characters” in the film. One of them was about the toy dinosaur, and advertised an archeology club that would discuss him. Students could pull of a tag at the bottom of the flyer, and go onto a website to get a free ticket for the screening. I attached the pictures of the flyers for you to see. While this was a good idea, and it did get a lot of attention, there was one big problem with the promotion.

The screening was only going to be the first 65 minutes of the movie, a movie that would in total only be 90 minutes. They main reason being the film wasn’t done yet, and they wanted to get this screening out before college kids went home for the summer. However most people, myself included, didn’t want to see only 65 minutes of a movie. So interest dramatically dropped, all across the country. The screenings for these “cliffhanger screenings” (the 65 minutes ended with a cliffhanger), did very poorly in almost every college across the country. Temple only had 75 students out of a 250 seat theater, a number very low in industry standards. All the reps that worked on this promotion sited the reason as no one wanted to see only part of the movie. If it was the whole film, this screening would have sold out quicker than anything. However Disney decided to not rush the film, and showed only what they had done. They consider this promotion a failure, and hope change the strategy if they every do this again. I for one believe that it would have completely sold out if it was the full movie, and hope they can have it done in time for college students if they plan on doing this again.

Zack Silver: Kick-Ass promotion

This semester I am interning at a marketing firm named Allied, that does local screenings and promotions for movies from most of the big movie studios (everything except Warner Bros. and Paramount). So for the past 2 months, I have been in charge of the promotion for the film Kick-Ass. It’s a super hero movie, based off a graphic novel about people who are trying to become superheroes without any real powers. I chose to do my Locative Media project on this promotion, highlighting the different events and locations where we have held.

Now that the film is released, most of my work promoting the film is over. It has been a great experience and I’m a little saddened that my work is finished. Because of this promotion I was able to see the film over a month and a half before it came out, and I loved it. It was so much fun to watch, with a great story, tons of action and humor, and some great cinematography. This made promoting the film even more fun. Knowing how “awesome” the movie was, I was able to spread the word, and actually mean what I said. Getting people pumped about the movie, only made me more pumped to see it. I have seen it 3 times and counting, and plan on going again next week.

A movie like is one of the reasons I want to get into the industry. Not only is it an awesome movie, but the way it was produced inspired me. The author of the graphic novel, as well as the director, pitched it to multiple studios to get funding. They all suggested editing the graphic content in the comic, in order for the studio to back it. The producers and director decided to break free from studio involvement, and produce it themselves. I thought this was a great idea, as they were now allowed to truly be faithful to the comic, and create it in the best way. They eventually got a distribution deal through Lionsgate, which was a great move on their part. The film opened in #1 last weekend, and I only hope their success continues, as it’s a film that truly deserves it. GO SEE IT!

John Curall-Putting More Than One Video Player On A Page

Hello All, For those of you using the JW Player Lisa demoed for video on your web page, I came across and adjustment that needs to be made if you plan on using more than one video on a page. I thought it might be helpful to some of you. I tried to just repeat the steps Lisa showed us for each new video I was putting on the page. However, all it did was play the third video in the first videos place and display "this text will be replaced" in the other two slots. I did some research and I found out that if you don't give them each a different placeholder on the page it will just lay one on top of the other. The placeholder in the code that Lisa gave us was the name given to the div id. This can be changed to whatever you want as long as you also change it at the end of the code in the so.write section. I just changed the names to player 1, player 2, and player 3 respectively. For each video, I just replaced the two incidents of the name (I think Lisa's was"mediasource"? I don't have that page anymore) with "player1", "player2" and "player3" respectively. That worked like a charm and I was able to have 3 videos on one page. Hell Everyone,

I thought I already made this post, but apparently I forgot. I'm not really much of a blogger! Anyway, I have really enjoyed the guest speakers we have had for our class this semester. They have given us some interesting perspectives! I especially like the presentation from harvestworks. I find the work their doing very interesting as it relates to one of my focus areas projection and video design for live performance. I wish I could afford to take one of their classes as they seemed like they would be really helpful and informative. I wish we had had more time for the flash training guest speaker as that really wasn't enough time for him to get very far. I really wish the department would offer a Webart II class that would give more in depth flash training. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen before I graduate. I really liked the idea of what the other guest speaker was doing with the video workshops for school children. She makes me feel guilty for not giving back more! That's a pretty cool thing she's doing there! Anyway, I just wanted to share my insights on these speakers. I think this was a rare opportunity we had here that I wished the department did more of. The program is definitely more focused on filmmaking rather new media and experimental video stuff, so I think we really don't see a lot of this.

Cross Browser Compatibility

The more you design websites the more you will need to know about
cross browser compatibility. If you open your site in Firefox and then
Internet Explorer, chances are it will look different in each browser.
This is because of how the different browsers render different layouts.

One common issue is with centering

For my Mapping project, I needed a blue print of my house. My parents did not have one, so I went to this website and created my own. The website is very simple. You drag and click walls, windows, and doors to create your blueprint. There is also a 3-D model of the blueprint, that you can "walk" around in. The only problem with the website is that it is Flash. So, you can not save a picture without printing than scanning it.

I saw a really awesome new music video this week. Its called this too shall pass by ok go, and it was done in only two very long steadicam shots. They have a very in depth floor plan on the video's website, and its a very good example of locative media, and it maps out the two floor warehouse and giant machine that moves throughout it.

Hello All,

I encountered a problem that needed solving when I was doing my remix project. I thought maybe the problem and solution might be useful information for some of you. My project included some photos I found online that I had altered. I incorporated them into a Photoshop page layout along with a header I created, which I wanted to save as a sliced html page so that I could do rollovers. Once I got the page the way I wanted, I tried to save for web and devices, but it was grayed out and would not let me do it. I searched online and I found out that I needed to reduce the bits per channel to get this to "unlock". This is found under images then mode. My page was at 32 bits per channel so I reduced it to 16. This unlocked the save for web and devices and I was able to save it as I wanted. However, this severely degraded the quality of all of the elements on the page. In order to make the page look like the quality that I had it at initially I had to re-save for web and devices each of the individual elements on the page at the appropriate size and them replace them in Dreamweaver. This then allowed me to have the page at the quality I desired. I'm not sure if there was a way to avoid this problem in the first place. Maybe one of you knows Photoshop better and can post your thoughts. I thought maybe this could be helpful to others if they encounter this issue.

For my viral video I am working on remixing some archival footage of an old public service announcement. I hope to try and mix different archival footage to change the meaning of the original PSA, and perhaps develop my own message about war and nuclear weapons.

REMIX of Alice in Wonderland

After the class discussion about the concept of "remix", I started thinking about what remixes out there I really liked. First I thought of the collages I did when I was ten years old of Leonardo DiCaprio. Then I remembered a video someone showed me that I think is a really great example of a remix. This 19 year old australian editing wiz kid took audio from Disney's Alice in Wonderland and made a song with the audio (90% of it). I assume he added the drum beat himself. I think the song is pretty catchy and dreamy. He also edited the footage from the movie nicely to correspond with his song.

I would like to do something similiar without being too ambitious. I was thinking of doing a simple part from the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I was thinking of using Wizard of Oz footage. I don't think I would be able to do a whole song, but perhaps just a part of one wouldn't be too bad. I noticed in the kid's video he had a nice mix of layers. I wonder how long it took him to do it. Maybe I should stick with a Leo DiCaprio collage instead.....

I wonder if there are other songs I should try to remix and make my own also. There are quite a few Alice in Wonderland remixes on youtube. I can't wait for the Tim Burton remix!

(p.s. saw the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland and it was AWFUL. Total bummer. Why does he have to be so mainstream and cheesy?)

This is a video i saw a few years ago, made by a couple of guys with a still camera, and aside from some animation at the beginning with the letters its all still photos. I have done some stop motion myself so i thought this was pretty cool.

Earlier in class I mentioned a website that provides a variety of flash-based image galleries. As much fun at is to build them from scratch, it's not very efficient when you have multiple galleries on your website. I've been using Airtight's Simpleviewer and Autoviewer with a certain degree of success over the course of the semester. Once you download the script, you can build the galleries automatically in photoshop and customize as you see fit. They also just released Simpleviewer 2.0 and it looks very clean and professional--best of all, it is free.

I know it sounds a little cliche but google/youtube have been once of the most helpful things for this class. One the first day of class I was really worried because it seemed like almost everyone had some experience with the programs we were going to be using and I hadn't even heard of Dreamweaver. Whenever I would run into problems I would type in "how to___(whatever i was looking to do)____in dreamweaver" and almost every time there was something helpful. wix is a free website host that doesn't run on css, and is far less complicated then using dreamweaver. for those of you who are looking to make a fun website in half the time, wix is definitely a great place. you sign up, and you pretty much get launched into a website editor. the entire website is flash, they allow you to upload things like video, music, and pictures. you can set up buttons to get from page to page, link pages together, give them special behaviors. it comes stocked with a music player gallery and even light box gallery. it is actually a lot of fun, and kind of addictive. check out my work in progress site for rock way.

My intention for my final post was to provide another "helpful" link which helped me this semester. But in all honesty, I have ran out of such sites, and I'm not going to search frantically for a site that demonstrates the best and easiest way to bring your Flash dreams to life. Instead, I'm going to offer my comforting opinion to my fellow sleep deprived classmates.

When I stumble onto a site that employs flash animation in some way, I tend to back track out of there. When I see motion on a page that I didn't provoke, I don't like it. For one thing, it makes the page a tad more difficult to load, and if you're like me, you have multiple pages open simultaneously, so you don't want one individual site hogging the download.

Second, it reminds me of those annoying advertisements that pop up on other sites. This gripe could just be me, but I want control over what appears on my computer screen.

Finally, it detracts from some welcomed simplicity. Of course you can incorporate some flash as long as your layout calls for it. It's all about balance. If your site is simple to the point that it is bland, try some flash. If you got everything on your site pretty while being fully functional, then you don't need anything "flashy." I don't know. I guess I'm a guy of simple tastes.

I just wanted to put some people's fears to rest. Don't worry, your site looks great.

The site is built to help web site designers and not the casual Photoshop user who tastefully alters his/her profile photo for Facebook (although it can aid such vain people). Fonts

I didn't think that this post could be useful to someone, but it might be. It is regarding fonts; something we all tend to overlook (Obviously, otherwise I would have posted this much sooner). Fonts are powerful and can speak more to an audience more than the words they compose. For instance, Times New Roman can suggest serious content while Comic Sans can conjure an "easy going" atmosphere. There are millions of fonts out there and they are constantly being made.

We can be among those few who design their own fonts for their own uses; we certainly have the power thanks to Photoshop. But why reinvent the wheel? I rely on this site for downloading fonts and it never let me down. It is, of course, one of hundreds of free font downloading sites, but I recommend this one because of its easily maneuverable layout and decent gallery. I hope it can serve you as well as it has served me.

A lot of people in class are making portfolio sites as their finals. As am I, but I'm selling myself as an editor. And film and video editors need demo reels to showcase their work to possible employers. It simply displays the editor's best work and skills in short commercial.

Second Life Article

I've been meaning to post this since we had that presentation of Second Life in class, but my schedule kept me from doing it. Anyway, I came across this article that refers to the game phenomenon in a bigger picture. I realize that there are many theories and philosophical debates that spawn from discussing Second Life. After all, the game allows people to do things that they cannot do in real life.

This article discusses one of the interesting ways in which the Second Life world affects the real world and in a positive way. I found it very thought provoking.

Locative Media Site for Philadelphia

This site was just launched last week. It's goal is to unite the Philadelphia experience all on one site. It allows individual users to post their experiences with the city through maps, blogging, images and video. It is especially useful when older Philadelphians reminisce about how their neighborhoods have changed over the years. In a rapidly changing landscape, it is important to document our history. People who actually lived in the neighborhoods can probably give a more accurate account of what the neighborhoods were actually like, especially when it comes to intangible experiences such as mood, smell and pride.

The historic, interactive map is the most impressive feature of this site. Also, I have never seen a more complete library of historic images for Philadelphia. Hopefully this site continues to grow as more Philadelphians donate their stories.

Recycling

I don't know if any of you have seen this video, but it does a great job illustrating how you can recycle your work into an entirely new visual identity. It seems obvious when looking at the video that Disney has in fact recycled their animations. However, when you saw Robin Hood, you probably didn't recognize some of the animation and characters were recycled directly from The Jungle Book. It solid proof that professionals recycle their works, so we shouldn't be afraid to either (images, animations, sounds, code, etc.)

Convert to videos to flash without downloading any programs

If you are looking for a quick, easy way to convert your videos without downloading any programs, go to:

When you upload your videos to Blip, it will convert your video to flash and will allow you to download it. Because it stores your video files, you can also use the sight as a junk drive, which will allow you to access you files where ever there is an internet connection. This is a real viable option, especially since the sight does not have the time and size restrictions like YouTube.

JW Media Player Troubleshooting

One thing that I found extremely frustrating with the JW Players is that the video or audio will not play in a browser when selected through Dreamweaver. You have to upload the media to the web and view the site live in order to ensure you media is connecting properly. I believe the media player has to communicate with JW's server in order to play your media files. This is not intuitive since JW gives you the JavaScript and the media player to insert into your site's folder. Hopefully this will save everyone a lot of time and frustration when attempting to get your media working with Dreamweaver.

In addition to Kim's free sound effect websites, I would also like to contribute The Freesound Project (http://www.freesound.org/). You have to join, but it's free. You can also contribute your own personal library of sounds to the site. It's another way to help out your fellow film students. The sound effects would also be applicable to web design (i.e., flash. Also, FreeMediaGuide (http://www.freemediaguide.com/free_public_domain_videos.html) offers a few good sites in which could be useful to spice up your b-roll for a documentary.

This raises the most important question for me, in retrospect of this class, "Why custom build a page if there are so many free services now?"

I think the fact that this is what most people do just makes it easier to stand out. All you really need to do is figure out the limitations of all the free stuff and make sure you go beyond it.
What looks like excess now is probably more conducive to holding up in the future, than spendthriftness. That's the way I see it.
