If you are interested in having your own website you will need to purchase
a domain name and server space through a web hosting service. There are
many companies to choose from and all of them offer different services.
The main thing is to know what you want and do some research to find
the right match. Here are some popular web hosting providers:
inmotion hosting - http://www.inmotionhosting.com/
ipage - http://www.ipage.com/ipage/index.bml
fatcow - http://www.fatcow.com/fatcow/special-promo.bml
bluehost - http://www.bluehost.com/
godaddy - http://www.godaddy.com
There are many others out there and I am not recommending these over others.
This list is just to serve as a starting point and are the companies I have seen
most frequently.

For people that like to learn things on their own time, there is a great website called tutvid.com. It give video tutorials in just about every Adobe Design Program. Underneath I've included three links to Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop tutorials.

John Curall-Class guest speakers
Hell Everyone,
I thought I already made this post, but apparently I forgot. I'm not really much of a blogger! Anyway, I have really enjoyed the guest speakers we have had for our class this semester. They have given us some interesting perspectives! I especially like the presentation from harvestworks. I find the work their doing very interesting as it relates to one of my focus areas projection and video design for live performance. I wish I could afford to take one of their classes as they seemed like they would be really helpful and informative. I wish we had had more time for the flash training guest speaker as that really wasn't enough time for him to get very far. I really wish the department would offer a Webart II class that would give more in depth flash training. Unfortunately, I don't think that's going to happen before I graduate. I really liked the idea of what the other guest speaker was doing with the video workshops for school children. She makes me feel guilty for not giving back more! That's a pretty cool thing she's doing there! Anyway, I just wanted to share my insights on these speakers. I think this was a rare opportunity we had here that I wished the department did more of. The program is definitely more focused on filmmaking rather new media and experimental video stuff, so I think we really don't see a lot of this.

John Curall-Dreamweaver Youtube Tutorials
Hello All,
For anyone that's interested I just discovered that youtube has tutorial videos for Dreamweaver.
Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dreamweaver+cs4+&aq=f
I had been specifically looking for a tutorial on creating a contact form on my portfolio site. There are a bunch of tutorials on there for that. I ended up just finding a way to re-use an old contact form for now, but I figured I'd share what I found with the rest of you. I hope all is going well with everyone's final projects!
See you in class!

Cross Browser Compatibility
The more you design websites the more you will need to know about
cross browser compatibility. If you open your site in Firefox and then
Internet Explorer, chances are it will look different in each browser.
This is because of how the different browsers render different layouts.
There are several good sites for getting a handle on how to deal with this.

One common issue is with centering
tags. For all browsers exceptInternet Explorer, setting the margins of the main
tag at auto will centereverything. IE does not recognize the auto formatting so we have to add
extra code to account for this. Here is the code you will need to add to your
CSS to center your page for IE and not have all of your text centered at the
same time:

Found some cool portfolio pages in my searches, some are made with flash and some lightbox, others use neither... They helped me to get a better idea of what I might do for my final project, hopefully they might serve as inspiration to you as well....

"ecard......people pay for this stuff?"-by Emily Kight
So, my surrogate Japanese grandmother keeps sending me ecards. I, for one, don't understand the appeal of ecards but it is evident that there is flash animation and web art design in these silly things. I think the most surprising thing is that she pays to send them....that means folks out there make money doing these ecard designs. Here is the latest one I got; http://www.jacquielawson.com/viewcard.asp?code=2304467241640&source=jl999
and this one is my favorite; http://www.jacquielawson.com/viewcard.asp?code=2257913741640&source=jl999
I wonder if there are special programs they use to make ecards. If anyone knows, lemme know. I would like to try my hand at it sometime so I could send one back to my grandma. They look like they might be fun to do.
